The History of Rapid Bay Primary School: A Student’s Perspective

Welcome to Rapid Bay Primary School! Our school has a rich history that showcases the incredible determination and collaboration of our community. Let me take you on a journey through time to understand how our school came to be.

Before our school was established, children in Rapid Bay had to travel all the way to Delamere for their education. Imagine riding on the back of a lorry along dusty, unpaved roads just to get to school! It was a tough journey, and that’s when our community decided it was time for a change.

In July 1949, a group of passionate women formed the Mother’s Club. They were determined to bring a school to Rapid Bay. They organised meetings, rallied community support, and even started a petition to convince the Education Department that we needed our own school. Despite facing several rejections, these women never gave up.

Finally, in February 1950, their hard work paid off. They secured permission to build a school in Rapid Bay. It was a huge victory for our community! BHP, a major company in the area, offered land and helped with construction. Local builder Frank Storey made the bricks, and the Stein brothers were tasked with building the school. Many others, including BHP employees, pitched in to make it happen. It was truly a community effort.

Although the school wasn’t completely finished, it opened its doors in November 1950. For the first time, children in Rapid Bay had their very own school, and they no longer had to travel long distances for their education. It must have been an exciting day for everyone involved!

In 1980, Rapid Bay entered into a partnership with Delamere Rural School. Rapid Bay became the junior primary school, while Delamere catered to the upper primary students. This arrangement worked well until the end of 1990, when Delamere School closed, and all its students joined us at Rapid Bay. To accommodate everyone, new classrooms were added, and the layout of the school was adjusted. The original building was transformed into an administrative office and library, and additional demountable classrooms were brought in.

Over the years, Rapid Bay Primary School has seen many changes, but it has always remained a central part of our community. Its history is a testament to the power of community spirit and the importance of education in shaping the future of our area. Our school has grown and adapted, continuing to provide quality education for generations of students while keeping our community’s values at its heart.
