In South Australia, children must be enrolled in school by the age of 6, which is the compulsory starting age for education.
The first year of primary school is called Reception. If your child turns 5 before 1 May, they are eligible to start school at the beginning of the year.
Mid-Year Intake (from 2024)
From 2024, if your child turns 5 between 1 May and 31 October, they have the option to start school either:
- In term 3 of the same year, or
- In term 1 of the following year.
Students starting through the mid-year intake will complete 6 terms of Reception.

Transition
High Schools provide a comprehensive program each year, to ensure a smooth transition from primary school. This program includes visits to the students’ chosen high school, providing them with an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new environment.
These visits typically take place in Term 4, and further information will be communicated closer to the scheduled dates from their chosen highs school.
